/Icelandic New Jersey-born singer and songwriter Iris has something to say and she’s letting everyone know through her relatable lyrics and profound vulnerability.
Exploring themes like heartbreak and finding happiness, Iris recently released her single “Crazy,” which has achieved a feature in Netflix’s hit series Santa Clarita Diet. Produced by Grammy® award winner Malay (Frank Ocean & John Legend) and Taylor Johnson, the song was written by Iris along with Josh Hendrick and will hit listeners right in the heart, at the intersection of heartbreak and honesty.
Iris sat down with Musical Notes Global to talk all about “Crazy,” how she developed her sound and more. Check out the full interview below.
MNGBlog: Congratulations on the release of your debut single "Crazy"! How does it feel now that it's finally out?
Iris: Thank you, it feels amazing! It's been a long journey for me to find my sound and I feel like this song really represents me as an artist and for what's to come!
MNGBlog: How did your collaboration with Malay and Taylor Johnson on this track come about?
Iris: Malay has always been my go-to producer. He produced my band, Linus Young, back in the day, and he understands me as an artist. He understood the sound that I was going for with this track as well as Taylor! He has always been a good friend and collaborator of Malay's, so knowing what an amazing guitar player he is, he knows how to elevate a song, really write melodies, and amazing guitar and piano riffs that just make the song next level.
MNGBlog: Is there a specific message you wish to convey through the song?
Iris: I want people to know that love doesn't make sense, and that's okay. Feeling crazy to yourself and to others happens to everyone. Love can make you do that.
MNGBlog: How did the song get picked up by Netflix for a feature in Santa Clarita Diet?
Iris: My good friend Manny Marroquin had approached me about submitting the song to one of his friends that works at Netflix. They were looking for up and coming acts and I am so grateful that they picked my song to be a part of it! I love that show so much, especially Drew Barrymore! I've always been a huge fan of hers, so to be a part of something that she does is such an honor. It was a great feeling to know too that what I was doing was connecting with people.
MNGBlog: How do you think "Crazy" shows the world who Iris is as an artist?
Iris: I think it shows my voice and my creative style. I love all types of genres of music, and I think my singing style, along with the production, showcases that. I felt like this song really is the foundation of what's to come for me as an artist.
MNGBlog: How has your sound evolved over the years? Are there any artists who you'd say significantly impacted its development?
Iris: I used to be one of the lead singers in a band called Linus Young, which was myself and a guy that sang together. I feel like that gave me a great understanding of who I wanted to be as a solo artist. It helped me find my voice as a solo artist. I love rock and roll and amazing artists such as Stevie Nicks and Robert Plant. I loved how they always sang with purpose, but also with no inhibitions. I feel like I'm finally finding that within myself.
MNGBlog: What is something about you that every Iris fan should know?
Iris: That there's more music on the way! I want you to know that I appreciate and love the opportunity to do this, and having your support truly means the world to me! I can't wait to finish the rest of my records, start doing shows, and meet all of you!
MNGBlog: What do you hope to accomplish in 2019?
Iris: I want to finish my EP and start doing shows. Touring is definitely at the top of my list!
