Phebe Starr immediately captured our hearts with her sparkling electro-pop when we first heard about her in 2017, and we’ve been listening ever since.

This month, the Australian singer-songwriter has returned with a new single and the news that she will be releasing a poignant new EP in August.

Ice Tea Liberace dives into loss innocence and growing up, and its lead single “TOUCH XXX” makes the perfect introduction to the upcoming four-track collection. Exploring lost love and the aftermath of a relationship that has come to an end, the song reminds listeners of Starr’s ability to connect with listeners at a deeply emotional and intuitive level by bringing beauty to even the most painful of life’s moments.

“I called this song TOUCH XXX because XXX means that there's explicit adult content and yes that usually means sexual and has some sort of social stigma and shock attached to it,” she reveals. “Those feelings of shock are how I felt learning I’d lost emotional connection in a relationship that I’d been in since I was a teenager and I thought would last forever. No one ever warned me about that Adult content. I would like those emotions to come with an adult warning because they are not PG.”

Starr also recently shared an accompanying music video for the single, which employs neo-noir elements to depict the darkness of love slipping away.

“I worked with Sydney based photographer and videographer, Ash Lim, to make the video for TOUCH XXX,” she explains. “We never set out to make a video, it just happened organically. He lived directly across the street from me with a few friends in Redfern, Sydney. Before heading to the studio each day, there were countless mornings where we would greet each other in front of our terraces and ask, ‘Coffee?’. We would chat away on our walks to Bourke Street and Ash always brought this oddly shaped, hand-cranked, old school film camera too which makes up most of the frames in the video. During the time of recording TOUCH XXX, I was going through a breakup and the loss of a friend. It was a rough time in my life. Ash was a constant, always having a cup of tea at the ready. We would capture those moments and constantly share ideas and create. Music and Art have always been a safe place for me and I feel lucky that we made something that really represented a period of my life, which was insane but was softened by friendship, coffee, conversations, and creation.”
