Track By Track: Larkins Breaks Down New EP Hit and Run

Drawing comparisons to the Klaxons and The 1975, Manchester-based indie rock band Larkins is here and they’re on the brink of something huge.

Natives of Glossop in Derbyshire, Josh Noble (vocals/guitar) and Dom Want (guitar/synth) met in school, where they started making music together before expanding to a quartet with the help of bassist/synth player Henry Beach and drummer Gaskell.

Having perfected a sound that takes up just the right amount of space and attention, Larkins is now celebrating the release of their new EP Hit and Run, a high-energy four-track collection that immediately draws listeners into its dynamic melodies and driving vocal performances.

Larkins broke down Hit and Run, track by track, exclusively for Musical Notes Global. Check out their thoughts below!

“Hit And Run”

A track that we're approaching as the band we are now rather than when we wrote it. BOP. I remember hearing someone say that you have to approach older songs as the band you are now, not as the band you were when you write them. So to release a reworked version of ‘Hit & Run’ feels so good.”

“Make You Better”

I think when you’re growing up you don’t realise how important your grandparents are and how benevolent they seem. Losing them was tough but it’s even harder when you still have so much more to say. Our most personal release to date.

“Flood”

A song about politics entering relationships. Fuck that, just jump. Musically I became obsessed with ‘80s pop in the summer and how the percussion against the LinnDrum just sounded insane. I was trying to write something where the bass felt super programmed alongside a crazy organic top end.

“Pieces”

Sometimes you need a stop and focus on yourself for a minute. Our tribute to all the bands we listened to growing up. It was cool for us to release a song now that we remember being written in the front room of Josh’s parents’ house years ago and see people take to it in such a strong way.
