[INTERVIEW] Spanish-Born Composer + Artist Spread LOF Talks Songwriting, Bull Nene, + More
/With a slew of worldwide hits to his name, such as “Loquita” (Reik and Rauw Alejandro), “Doble Cara” (Arcangel), “De Todo” (Blessd), “Contento” (Mike Bahía), “Puñales” (Llane), and many more, Manuel Lorente Freire, known globally as Spread LOF, has quickly risen to become one of the most sought after songwriters in the Latin music industry.
Getting his start at the tender age of nine, Spread LOF honed his rap skills in Madrid’s music scene before landing in Medellín in 2019. Unable to travel back to his native Spain due to the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, the rising sensation worked harder than ever in the city he’s come to call home for the past three years to pursue his dreams, forming priceless connections, including Bull Nene, Colombian composer and co-founder of the iconic production house and recording studio Infinity Music, that have helped him to further develop his career and artistry to an incredible new level.
Spread LOF’s writing voice is unmistakable, and to date, the songs he has worked on have garnered a cumulative 300 million+ streams globally across digital platforms. He has achieved Platinum and Gold certifications from the RIAA for the hit singles he’s composed for Sebastián Yatra, “Tacones Rojos” and “A Dónde Van” ft. Álvaro Díaz, respectively, and most recently he lent his skills to J Balvin’s latest single “Niño Soñador,” which was released in February.
Spread LOF sat down with Musical Notes Global to discuss his career, his passion for songwriting, and what he hopes to achieve in the future. Check out the full interview below.
Musical Notes Global: What made you want to pursue a career in music?
Spread LOF: I never saw it as a professional until it was too late to say no hahahahahaha, but I come from a family of artists, I have always been related to the world of art and it remained in my life as a form of relief.
MNG: What do you love most about songwriting?
Spread LOF: To be able to tell stories, capture my feelings and the ones of people I work with, travel the world making music and being able to meet people from diverse places that share the same passion as me.
MNG: How has working with Bull Nene influenced you and your work?
Spread LOF: He showed me the way, he taught me that I was able to do it and most importantly he structured the first floor of the building that I am currently building.
He gave me a different vision of music, I always learn a lot from him, he will always be a brother to me.
MNG: Are there any specific moments in your career that stand out to you the most?
Spread LOF: I love to look back, and see all the journey I have gone through, each step has been incredible, and I am aware that there is no set goal, success is the journey. But March of 2020, when the quarantine began, despite being a very hard time for everyone, it was a time for me where I had to be reborn and change almost everything I expected in life, this was necessary in order to build all the success in my career that I am enjoying today.
MNG: What is one of the greatest lessons you have learned so far?
Spread LOF: One of my biggest lessons is that: words are more important than we think, how we manifest things is key, and patience in this career as in many others, you have to work without seeing results, but every step you take is worth it and brings its reward in the long term.
MNG: What are you looking forward to accomplishing in the future?
Spread LOF: I would like to transcend with my music, leave a legacy, change something in the world, and leave the world a little better than I found it.
