Italian Band La Rua Captivates with Positive Vibes

With origins in Ascoli Piceno, Italian pop/nu-folk band La Rua is enchanting audiences with their upbeat sound and infectious positive energy. The six-piece band, which comprises members Daniele Incicco (vocals, guitars), William D’Angelo (guitars), Davide Fioravanti (piano, concertina, glockenspiel), Nacor Fischetti (drums, fx), Alessandro Mariani (guitars, banjo), and Matteo Grandoni (double bass, bass), has opened for American rock band Imagine Dragons in Milan and is conquering Italy one listener at a time. Now they are getting ready to kick off the new year with two big shows. MNGBlog talked to La Rua about their influences, their new single, and what the future holds.

Lead by the distinctive voice of frontman Daniele Incicco, La Rua has become known and loved for performing an invigorating brand of music that speaks to multiple generations. Influenced by a wide range of sounds, artists, and experiences, each member brings his own unique perspective to the group. “Everyone has his own specific cultural background, which when fused with the others, contributes to growing our sound,” keyboardist Davide Fioravanti explained. “However, groups like Mumford and Sons, Arcade Fire, OneRepublic, as well as great artists of the world’s musical history like Bruce Springsteen, have played an important roll in our artistic growth.” And with the help of songwriter/producer Dario Faini, who has written big hits for artists such as Marco Mengoni, Annalisa, and Luca Carboni, and who Fioravanti said "has had an important role in bringing what characterizes us to its maximum potential,” the band's sound has solidified into what it is today: an audible unification of everything that's good in life.

The band was formed in 2004, but the past year and a half have been especially fortuitous for La Rua, finding themselves as contestants on the 15th season of Italian talent show Amici di Maria De Filippi (2015-2016), a platform that has helped launch the careers of popular Italian acts like Dear Jack, The Kolors, Emma Marrone, and Alessandra Amoroso. Coached by Sanremo winners Marrone (2012) and Elisa (2001), the band was given excellent advice to help move their career forward. “Every word they said to us for us was advice to take and keep,” Fioravanti said. “We can only learn from professionals of such a level of Italian music like them: Emma taught us to always bring out more of ourselves. Elisa made us better, immediately focusing our character going to work on the details and assigning us some songs that would bring to its maximum potential our fundamental characteristic: energy.”

Just a few months after the release of their studio album Sotto effetto di felicità, a nine-track album produced by La Rua along with Faini, the group participated as contestants on RAI’s special Sarà Sanremo. The live television event, held in December 2016, was the culmination of the selection process to determine the eight artists that will compete in Sanremo's New Artist category this February. About the experience Fioravanti told MNGBlog: “Outside of the final night, we experienced the previous week of preparation with a lot of positivity and meeting extraordinary artists among the finalists.”

La Rua entered Sarà Sanremo with the song “Tutta la vita questa vita,” a lighthearted, sunshine-infused anthem that follows the band's signature feel-good vibe. “The song sprouts from a thought, from a slogan: it’s the picture of our emotional state after a summer lived to the max, with many concerts,” Fioravanti explained. “We have the opportunity to work in music, what we like. We have quite an audience behind us. And it’s a tribute to them: in the song's video they are our protagonists. On a textual level, thanks to the help of our seventh member, Dario [Faini], we gave it an international flavor and extended the song to an emotional relationship between two people." After a startling upset saw La Rua cut from Sará Sanremo, the outpouring of love all over social media was immediate and overwhelming. Their entry was a favorite among the audience, and it quickly won the hearts of many. “We believed in our song, so the elimination obviously burned, but at the same time something happened that we would never have expected: the virtual embrace by the audience with their ovation and their support both in the room and on the web. All this affection refilled us with tremendous optimism, because this is the only thing that matters in the end.”

But there's a silver lining in every cloud and although they won't be contestants during this year's Festival, Sanremo host Carlo Conti recently announced that the band will return as guests on an episode of after show DopoFestival and that “Tutta la vita questa vita” will be one of the Festival's publicity jingles. “We are very happy that Conti still wanted to reward our music, naming us as guests for DopoFestival and selecting our song as a jingle. It will be in every way an occasion to always be known through our songs."

La Rua has two live shows coming up in Italy this month in Rome and Milan, and they are preparing with “Rehearsals, rehearsals, and more rehearsals!" Fioravanti said. "In addition to some songs played this summer you’ll find some treats and some particular moments that we decided to include only for these two special events! It's not long now, everything is almost ready! We await you January 25 in Rome at Quirinetta and January 26 in Milan at La Salumeria della Musica.”

Fans in the U.S., don't feel left out! La Rua said they would love to come perform here! “Who wouldn’t want to! It would be crazy cool! A way to confront and personally experience a reality that any musician dreams of!”

La Rua has captured our hearts, and MNGBlog can't wait to see what's next for them. "We continue to write," Fioravanti said. “There are many ideas ready to be developed and songs that we would like to play already...we want to be sure of being able to give our audience some even better songs compared to the last album. We are never satisfied!” Above all, though, the band hopes "to able to live music through a continuous relationship with those who follow us and listen to our music," Fioravanti said. "Our audience is our lifeblood."

E con l’aiuto del compositore/produttore Dario Faini, che ha scritto grandi successi per artisti come Marco Mengoni, Annalisa e Luca Carboni e chi Fioravanti ha detto “ha avuto un ruolo determinate nel portare al massimo potenziale ciò che ci caratterizzava”, il suono della band è diventato quello che è oggi: una combinazione udibile di tutto quello che è buono nella vita.

La band è nata nell'anno 2004, ma l’ultimo anno e mezzo è stato particolarmente fortuito per La Rua, trovandosi come concorrente nella 15isma stagione del show di talento italiano Amici di Maria De Filippi (2015-2016), una piattaforma che ha aiutato lanciare le carriere di artisti italiani popolari come Dear Jack, The Kolors, Emma Marrone, e Alessandra Amoroso. Solo pochi mesi dopo l'uscita del loro album Sotto effetto di felicità, un album prodotto da La Rua insieme a Faini e contiene nove brani, il gruppo ha partecipato come concorrenti dello speciale Sarà Sanremo di RAI. L’evento è andato in onda in diretta a dicembre 2016 ed è stato il culmine del processo di selezione per determinare gli otto artisti che formeranno la categoria Nuove Proposte di Sanremo a febbraio 2017. Sull'esperienza, a MNGBlog Fioravanti ha raccontato: “Aldilà della serata finale, abbiamo vissuto la settimana precedente di preparazione con molta positività e incontrando tra i finalisti, artisti straordinari”.

La Rua era in gara a Sarà Sanremo con il brano “Tutta la vita questa vita”, un inno allegro e pieno di sole che segue lo stile piacevole della band. “Il brano nasce da un pensiero, da uno slogan: è la fotografia del nostro stato emotivo dopo un’estate vissuta al massimo, con tantissimi concerti,” ha spiegato Fioravanti. “Abbiamo l’opportunità di lavorare con la musica, quel che ci piace, abbiamo un bel po’ di pubblico dietro. Ed è un tributo proprio per loro: nel video del brano sono loro i protagonisti. A livello testuale, grazie all’aiuto del nostro settimo componente, Dario, abbiamo dato un taglio internazionale e di allargare la canzone a un rapporto a due e affettivo”.

La Rua è stata eliminata dalla competizione in una sconfitta sorprendente, ma l’emissione d’affetto sui social network era immediata ed enorme. Il loro brano, uno dei preferiti tra il pubblico, ha conquistato velocemente i cuori di tanti. “Credevamo nel nostro brano, quindi l’eliminazione ovviamente ha bruciato, ma nello stesso momento è successo qualcosa che non ci saremmo mai aspettati: l’abbraccio virtuale del pubblico con la loro ovazione e il loro supporto sia in sala che sul web. Tutto quest’affetto ci ha ricaricato di positività all’ennesima potenza, perché questo è l’unica cosa che conta in fin dei conti”.

Ma dietro ogni nuvola c’è un raggio di sole e anche se non sarà concorrente nel Festival quest’anno, conduttore Carlo Conti ha annunciato recentemente che la band tornerà come ospite di DopoFestival e che “Tutta la vita questa vita” sarà intersigla. “Siamo molto contenti che Conti abbia voluto comunque premiare la nostra musica, chiamandoci come ospiti al Dopo Festival e scegliendo il nostro brano come intersigla. Sarà in ogni modo un’occasione per farci conoscere sempre attraverso le nostre canzoni”.

La Rua si esibirà in due concerti questo mese, a Roma e a Milano, ed i ragazzi si preparano con “Prove, prove e ancora prove!” ha detto Fioravanti. “Oltre ad alcuni brani suonati quest’estate, troverete alcune chicche e alcuni momenti particolari, che abbiamo deciso di inserire solo per questi due eventi speciali!! Manca poco, è quasi tutto pronto!! Vi aspettiamo il 25 gennaio a Roma al Quirinetta e il 26 gennaio a Milano a La Salumeria della Musica”.

Ma fan negli Stati Uniti, non vi sentite dimenticati! I La Rua hanno detto che vorrebbero esibirsi qui! “Beh, chi non vorrebbe! Sarebbe una figata pazzesca! Un modo per confrontarci e vivere in prima persona una realtà che qualsiasi musicista sogna!”

La Rua ha conquistato i nostri cuori e MNGBlog non vede l’ora di scoprire i loro prossimi progetti. “Continuiamo a scrivere”, ha detto Fioravanti. “Ci sono molte idee pronte per essere sviluppate e brani che già vorremmo suonare. Ma tempo al tempo: vogliamo esser sicuri di poter dare al nostro pubblico dei brani ancora migliori rispetto a quelli dell’ultimo album, non ci accontentiamo mai!” Sopratutto però la band spera di “poter vivere di musica attraverso un continuo contatto con chi ci segue e ascolta la nostra musica,” ha detto Fioravanti. “Il nostro pubblico è la nostra linfa vitale.”
