Alt-Pop Band Nightly Releases “Older” to Set the Tone for Debut Album night, love you
/Nashville based alt-pop band Nightly is no stranger to up-tempo bops and ballads crooning to an
ex or a future love. Jonathan Capeci, Joey Beretta, and Nick Sainato are constantly evolving their sound and captivating their fans single after single, and they're about to do it again with their first LP night, love you, due out tomorrow, October 16, via BMG Recordings.
Before dropping the album, Nightly has prepared one last track to set the tone. “Older,” released yesterday, is probably the most personal and vulnerable song the band has put out to date. The song’s raw, emotion-evoking, and heartbreaking lyrics cascade over an acoustic guitar with their signature soft synth occasionally in the background.
There are three main storylines for the slow paced track. One being the first verse: Capeci’s growing older in the present tense. He reflects on the fact that he didn’t take the “expected” route in life, i.e. not getting married young, not staying in his hometown, and taking a chance on his dreams. He wonders if he’s made a mistake.
When we’re young, we see adults and expect them to have their shit together. We don’t see that they also have no idea what they’re doing. When we grow up, it can feel like the world is on our shoulders. We can’t escape the pressure and wonder why we’re the only one struggling. We try and try to surpass expectations, but we forget that, in the end, everyone has absolutely no idea what’s going on.
The second verse hones in on the fact that Nightly, as a band, didn’t want to listen to a bunch of people who didn’t have their best interests in mind tell them how to write and produce their own music. The trio could have quit right then and there, but they thought of the fans that love and support them, giving them the strength to continue down a new path.
And in the third, the outro, Capeci is talking to his father, who calms his nerves, saying that he too was a mess at his age and that things will work out in the end. It feels like Capeci is talking to fans as well, telling them that if they feel like the world is on their shoulders now, keep going. Everything will be okay. This outro feels like a response to the hymn-like chorus: “I don’t do the things I’m supposed to/over thinking-under focused/ emotional rollercoaster/ keep it all on my shoulders/ hoping no one will notice/ I’m no good at getting older.”
Many of those in the music industry don’t have a linear path and that’s not talked about often. We see celebrities rising to fame or other people getting amazing jobs straight out of college, but when we don’t fit into the narrative, either feeling like an outsider or that there’s something wrong with who we are, with songs like “Older,” we feel less alone. This one is almost like a weighted blanket for the soul.
Listen to “Older” below and look out for night, love you, tomorrow.
