Papa Rosko is bringing chill vibes this week with some great new music.

Before embarking on his solo project, the singer, songwriter, composer, and producer founded and fronted the Nashville band Voodoo Possum, with which he played covers of country songs with a reggae twist.

Ahead of his upcoming self-titled debut album, which drops this Friday, October 16, Papa Rosko has released the music video for his cover of Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues.” Featuring Toots Hibbert of Toots & the Maytals in one of his final studio appearances, Rosko offers a refreshing new take on the timeless classic, pairing laid back, bouncing melodies with Cash’s hard hitting lyrics. As a special tribute to Toots, who passed away last month, he shouts out “54-46 That’s My Number,” a reference to Toots’ own prison song, at the end.

Papa Rosko’s self-titled debut album was recorded between South Florida and Kingston, Jamaica over the course of 2.5 years. “Folsom Prison Blues” opens the collection with a bang before proceeding to dynamic covers of “When You Say Nothing At All” (Keith Whitley, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Ronan Keating) and Third World’s “You’re Not the Only One,” among diverse and timely original compositions that incorporate elements of rock, pop, alternative, and Latin music.
